SSD Commitment to Ethical AI in Education

Generative AI Guidelines

Sunnyside School District (SSD) is dedicated to transforming the educational experience through the thoughtful and ethical integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in full alignment with our vision of Sunnyside Excellence.

Our AI strategy is centered on empowering both students and staff by providing access to robust AI tools and targeted training. These resources are designed to enhance learning, encourage creative exploration, and support professional growth—while also streamlining routine administrative tasks. This enables educators to dedicate more time to impactful instruction and relationship-building that truly matters.

SSD maintains rigorous data privacy and security standards and is guided by core principles that prioritize student learning, proactively manage risk, and cultivate a learning environment that is inclusive, equitable, and forward-thinking.

Sunnyside School District Vision for Artificial Intelligence

At Sunnyside School District (SSD), our approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rooted in our steadfast commitment to enhancing the educational experience for all students—while prioritizing their well-being, privacy, and security.

Guided by OSPI’s principle that “uses of AI should always start with human inquiry and always end with human reflection, human insight, and human empowerment,” we embrace AI as a tool that complements, not replaces, the vital human elements of teaching and learning.

By placing student learning at the center, AI-powered instructional tools can offer diverse opportunities for students to access support, generate ideas, and actively participate in their educational journeys. Much like other educational technologies, AI can serve as a meaningful aid in helping students demonstrate their understanding across disciplines in creative and personalized ways.

For staff, AI represents a powerful means to reduce the burden of routine and repetitive tasks. This allows educators to refocus their energy on impactful instruction, mentorship, and building strong relationships with students. This vision is reinforced by insights from the U.S. Department of Education’s report Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning, which highlights the importance of using AI to “handle low-level details to ease teaching burdens and increase focus on students.”

While we are excited by AI’s promise, we are equally mindful of its limitations. We emphasize the development of critical thinking and digital literacy for both students and staff when interacting with AI-generated content. These tools may sometimes produce biased, incomplete, or inaccurate information, and it is essential to approach them with thoughtful evaluation.

As AI continues to evolve, SSD remains committed to building a future-ready learning environment—one that is inclusive, ethical, and innovative. We will continue to develop resources that guide the responsible and effective use of AI in classrooms, all while upholding rigorous standards for data privacy and student safety.

By leveraging AI responsibly, we aim to create the best possible learning experiences for every student in SSD and prepare them to thrive in a dynamic, technology-rich world.
