Growth Mindset When It Comes to Safety

Our security liaisons participate in specialized training to address different scenarios they may encounter both with students and the public. Over the summer, they attended Washington State School Safety Conference, three security staff members also received trainer-level certification for ALICE, Sunnyside School District's response to active shooter situations. This means they are able to provide trainings to new staff members as they are hired and refreshers for everyone else.
Moore, along with Director of Maintenance and Facilities Jeremy Hazzard, spent the weeks leading up to the start of school training staff in ALICE.
Safety and security training opportunities will continue to be provided for staff members including de-escalation strategies and creating secure classroom environments.
With each new year, all staff must complete a series of web-based trainings covering topics like responses to medical emergencies such as asthma, allergic reactions, or seizures, reporting abuse, bullying, and harassment, and dealing with hazardous materials. Each training includes a quiz at the end that employees must pass in order to continue.
According to Executive Director of Human Resources Kris Diddens, the modules are an efficient way to meet our state requirements. More than 98 percent of Sunnyside employees had completed their training before the first day of school this year!
