School Closure - Staff Page

Staff Update 4/3/2020

Staffing April 6 - 10

April 6-10 will be observed as a traditional spring break. Meal pick up will continue through this time. We again commend our Nutrition Services team, transportation team, and our security liaisons for their support of our students, their positive attitudes and leadership during this time.

Childcare Update

The Sunnyside School District will be partnering with Inspire Development Center to provide childcare to first responders and healthcare workers as a last resort. We are currently reaching out to our first responder organizations to gather information about the amount of services that are needed.

Class of 2020 Update

Information regarding the minimum requirements for graduation and credit retrieval has been shared on the School Closure Information Page for our Class of 2020. The SHS Counseling Department has been hard at work getting individual graduation plans out to each senior to help them get to the graduation gate.

Device Deployment and Distance Learning

Planning is well underway to launch distance learning for our students in grades K-11. There are a lot of moving parts, including identifying students that need digital devices and helping those who need it find internet access. Our technology team and lab managers worked this week to prepare our fleet of Chromebooks to be available for students next week. More information about the deployment of these devices will be available next week.

We plan to launch our new “First Day of School,” on April 15. April 15 through April 24 will be a review of content and maintenance of standards that have already been taught. On April 27, we will begin systematizing new learning and standards for students. We will also use this time to help families with learning structures and supports in distance learning. More information will be available for families next week.

Communication to Staff (3/16/2020)
For important information updates, we will continue to use email. Please ensure you are checking your inbox in a timely manner. Please read the whole message as well. Except for Staff, which will be at the top of the update, topics will be in alphabetical order and include the day they were updated.

For alerts about reporting to a work site, we will use our robo-call system and our website. If you receive a phone call from 509-836-8404, please answer and listen to the message carefully. The information shared in the phone call will also be posted to our School Closure - Staffing Page.

Conferences and Report Cards (3/20/2020)
At this time there will be no conferences. We are working on a system to provide report cards to parents that would like to request them. More information will be available next week.

Confirmed Cases of Coronavirus in the Sunnyside School District (3/27/2020)
Monitor your health for symptoms including: Fever, Cough, and Shortness of Breath. If you show symptoms, please self-quarantine and contact your primary care physician for next steps.

If you show symptoms and you live with a first-responder, which includes medical care workers, fire and police professionals, please contact your physician to get tested as soon as possible.

More information about the coronavirus is available by contacting the Washington State Department of Health Hotline at (800) 525-0127.

Facilities Access (3/16/2020)
Schools, fields, playgrounds, gyms, and weight rooms are closed to the public and district employees until April 24. This closure is different than a holiday or spring break closure where some facilities remain open or employees are allowed to come in. So, for both sanitizing and safety purposes, they will remain completely closed.

Graduation-Focused Learning (3/27/2020)
Our high school team is working to create a plan for our SHS seniors to reach graduation. We have students at different points in the journey, and staff is taking into account the needs of each student as they move forward in planning. They are also taking into consideration the guidance of the State Board of Education as they develop the plan. At this time APEX, our district’s credit retrieval program, is up and running, and College in the High School classes continue at this time. More information will be communicated as it comes available.

Hiring (3/16/2020)
At this time we plan to continue with our regular hiring processes. Jobs will continue to be posted for a minimum of 5 days. You can view current and future openings in TalentEd. Interviews may be done electronically.

Home Learning Resources (3/20/2020)
The Sunnyside School District has created a Home Learning Resources page for parents and students to use while school is closed. As a reminder, these resources are optional opportunities to encourage student learning from home. These resources have been evaluated by district administrators and our technology staff to ensure they are appropriate and safe for students. If you have a suggested site that is not listed here, please email the link to As we identify more resources, they will be added to this page.

Leave (3/16/2020)
If you have questions regarding vacation or sick leave, please contact the Human Resources Department at 509-836-2247.

Nutrition Services (3/27/2020)

We are changing our Meal Pick-Up schedule and consolidating our locations in order to provide meal pick-up locations at seven new spots for families unable to make it into the schools. Please visit the Meal Pick Up section of the School Closure page for all the details. It will be shared on social media as well.

Mental Health Services (3/20/2020)
Comprehensive Mental Health is still open. To schedule an appointment in person, or to check in over the phone, please call 509-837-2089 and request a time with your provider.

They have increased building sanitation and social distancing among clients and staff to help maintain public health and safety. If you are sick, have a heightened health risk, or are exposed to someone who has been sick, check-in phone calls are available to help keep you and your family safe.

Additionally, if you are or have a student who receives school-based services at Sunnyside High School, you can email to schedule an appointment at the Comprehensive Healthcare office in Sunnyside.

Do not hesitate to call the 24-hour open crisis line at 509-575-4200 if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency. Any updates regarding services impacted by COVID-19 can be found at the Comprehensive Healthcare website:

Online Learning (3/16/2020)

Sunnyside School District will not be providing online learning to students. At this time, we do not have the ability to provide online learning equitably to all students. The Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Department will be gathering supplemental resources for families to access from our website, if they choose to. We respect and commend our teaching staff’s desire to support students at this time, but require that starting March 16, there be no more assigned student work.

Purchasing (3/27/2020)
All non-essential purchasing has been suspended until further notice.
