Contact Tracing

Contact tracing is key to slowing the spread of COVID-19 and helps protect you, your family, and your community and slows the spread of COVID-19.


Contact tracing helps protect you, your family, and your community by:


  • Letting people know they may have been exposed to COVID-19 and should monitor their health for signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Helping people who may have been exposed to COVID-19 get tested.
  • Asking people to self-isolate if they have COVID-19 or self-quarantine if they are a close contact.


Contact Tracing may be done by the Sunnyside School District Building Coordinator and/or by the Yakima Health Department.

If you have been in close contact (within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more) you will be contacted and given guidance on testing and self-quarantine. 

If someone on your building has tested positive for COVID-19 and it has been determined through contact tracing that you were not a close contact, you will be notified by email. 


Quarantine and isolation are necessary safety steps for possible COVID-19 cases. Staff and students should be prepared for the possibility of quarantine or isolation. Quarantining or isolating staff and students are steps to prevent the rapid spread of the virus. Building Coordinators will notify covid-positive individuals via phone call to complete a Contact Tracing form that will be sent via email. The Coordinator will also alert the HR Director/District COVID Coordinator.


  • The Building Coordinator reviews the Contact Tracing Form results and maintains the HIPAA required privacy while taking the following steps: 
  • Confirms information with covid-positive person
  • Discusses isolation with covid-positive person
  • Notifies all close contacts 
  • Notifies staff in the same building/department who were not close contacts that        there was a Covid-Positive case but they were not a close contact and do not need to take any action. 
  • Discusses quarantine with close contacts
  • Refer staff close contacts to HR or Admin for questions regarding sick leave options
  • Notifies Yakima Health District.
